manchester fashion network: making it

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I wanted to tell you about an event I attended a couple of weeks ago in Manchester City Centre; Making It: Styling. Held by the Manchester Fashion Network at the General Store on Deansgate, the night comprised of three industry speakers each from a different area within the styling sector.

With the first floor of the store adapted to host the event, the turnout of around one hundred guests was great; the room felt intimate yet buzzing. The free beer was flowing around the room filled with young, studenty types just dying to know the secrets of how to land that dream job.

the audience eagerly awaiting to hear about having a career as a stylist

The guest speakers were Martine Alexander, Paula Mc Namara and Bryan Harrop who all live within the Greater Manchester area. MFN’s Dale Hicks spent around 45 minutes asking the stylist’s various questions regarding their careers. Their answers seemed genuine, insightful and very optimistic, especially for students like myself faced with the uncertaintees of empoyement after graduation. It is no surprise that the stylists warned of hard work ahead if this is the career that you want, however their personal stories of reaching their goals were very inspiring.

The event was a great opportunity for anybody wanting to know more about this part of the industry. The floor was open for questions at the end of the interview, however Dale Hicks’ great interviewing technique left little to be needed to be asked by the audience. Making It: Styling was the first of a series of making it events with the next event, Making It: Fashion Design to be held on the 22nd April, 2010. I will definately be attending this as I feel it is a rare opportunity to be able to hear such great advice from industry professionals and being able to network with others at the event is invaluable.
